THE RUSTY IRONMAN

Well here goes – my first blog ever. Where to start????? I’m not a facebook fiend as it turns out so I’ve just deactivated that account (sorry friends) but I kind of thought it would be fun to document -  when I can - my return to IRONMAN after 17 years (1993 and 1994). My best mates kind of coerced me into taking up the challenge again over our usual Saturday morning run and coffee after a bit too much talk of ‘days of yore’!
At that stage it was about seven months out and here we are about four months out. I’ve been ironman training – that is I had to return to swimming after about ten years and I just increased the run from about eight on a Saturday casual to two to three a week – only doing fifteen k max at present and do that fairly comfortable. I’ve been predominately a cyclist for most of the last ten years so that’s my leg where I can sacrifice a bit in training i.e. I really need to catch up the swimming and running will come along fine.
Training  to date (last two months roughly) is eight swims starting with getting one k out and now 1.8k with lots of toys to play with – swimming is really boring and if I can’t use a pool bouy, paddles and kickboard I will sink with boredom! That will change in the coming weeks when I start a squad session to drag me up to 3.8k with all the other serious ironmen.
I suppose I can claim I’m an ironman as I’ve done two albeit pre children and marriage?? And is it Ironperson now?? Someone let me know as I have some major marketing issues with the IROMAN trademark.
Sunny Queensland over the last few months has been flooded so my riding has been about – well let’s say lucky it’s my strong leg – did I mention to make matters complicated I’m ostensibly an off roader – single speed, fully rigid, steel bike!!! It gets worse – my ‘roadie’ is a ‘fixie’ – yep no gears and those pedals don’t stop until I do. More on my bike issues later.
So in a nutshell, I’ve got some swimming to do, running is going good – despite a strained calf last Friday and I need a carbon roadie with gears – really soon! More on that later.
My final entry on this tragic moment in social networking history is my three best friends – I will come up with pseudonyms for them but in the meantime let’s just call them – huey louey and douey! Or the three amigos – anyway I intend to include them on this journey – eeeewww – I hate that phrase!
